Start early

The inland desert warms much faster than the coast. Leave after breakfast with a local driver, water and sun protection. Mobile signal fades quickly, tracks are poorly marked and ordinary rental cars are not intended for sand.

Imlili and the desert landscape

Imlili is known for its small permanent pools set in a stark salt-desert landscape. Treat the site gently: do not enter the pools with sunscreen or leave food behind. The drive is part of the experience, crossing empty plains where distances are easy to underestimate.

White Dune and lagoon viewpoints

On the return, stop at viewpoints above the lagoon or visit the White Dune when tide and access allow. The pale ridge against turquoise water is most attractive in lower, softer light. Wind becomes stronger in the afternoon, so protect cameras from blowing sand.

Go prepared

Carry more water than you expect to use, closed shoes, a hat and a warm layer for the drive back after sunset. Choose an operator who carries recovery equipment and respects wildlife and local access rules.
