Most guides to Dakhla describe the wind with a single sentence: "it blows almost every day." That is true, and it is useless for planning. This guide replaces the slogan with numbers taken from the ERA5 reanalysis for the Dakhla grid cell — the same dataset behind every climate page on this site — and then explains what those numbers do and do not tell you.
Wind by month
Two figures matter for a rider. The mean daily peak is the average of each day's strongest wind: what a typical afternoon builds to. The mean daily peak gust is the same for gusts, and the gap between the two is the texture of the air.

Read down the first column and the season is obvious. June and July sit at the top, February through September form a broad plateau, and November and December fall away. The spread across the whole year is smaller than at most destinations: even the calmest month averages a daily peak that would count as a sailable day in much of Europe.
How to read these numbers without being misled
This is the part most sites skip, and it matters more than the table itself.
These are averages across many days. Averaging is a flattening operation: it mixes the 30-knot afternoons with the grey, still ones and returns something in the middle that may describe neither. The mean July peak of about 19 knots does not mean July afternoons deliver 19 knots. It means that if you took every July afternoon over several years and averaged their strongest hour, you would land near 19.
Two consequences follow, and they point in opposite directions:
- Good days are stronger than the table. A well-established trade-wind afternoon in July regularly runs well above the monthly mean. That is why riders talk about 25 knots while the dataset says 19 — both are correct, describing different things.
- Weak days are hidden by it. The same average absorbs the afternoons that never fill in. A month with a high mean still contains light days; the mean simply tells you they are rarer.
So use the monthly figures to choose a month, and use the live forecast to choose a day. They answer different questions, and neither substitutes for the other.
The daily rhythm
Dakhla's wind is partly thermal. The Sahara heats up through the morning, the air above it rises, and cooler air is drawn in off the Atlantic across the peninsula. Layered on top of the background trade wind, this produces a daily cycle that is remarkably repeatable:
- Morning — the lightest part of the day. Often glassy on the lagoon, sometimes foggy between late spring and early autumn.
- Late morning — the gradient starts to build as the land warms.
- Mid to late afternoon — the peak. In the hourly averages, the windiest hour of the mean day falls between 16:00 and 18:00 in every single month of the year.
- After sunset — the thermal component collapses and the wind eases within an hour or two.
That consistency is the practical gift of this coast: you rarely have to guess when to be ready, only whether the day will deliver.
How many usable hours a day actually holds
A monthly average tells you about strength. It says nothing about duration — and duration is what turns a trip into sessions. The table below counts, in the average day of each month, how many hours the modelled wind sits at or above two thresholds: roughly the point a heavier rider on a large kite gets going, and the point the lagoon starts to feel properly powered.

Read this table with the averaging caveat firmly in mind. Because it is built from the mean hourly profile, it describes the typical day, not the good one. On a strong day the usable window is longer and stronger than anything shown here; on a flat day there is no window at all. What the table captures correctly is the shape of the season: how the usable part of the day grows through spring, saturates in early summer, and shrinks quickly through late autumn.
Used that way it answers real questions. A week in June or July is a week where the average day already carries a long window, so a couple of poor days still leaves plenty. A week in November leans on the good days, so a longer trip or flexible dates matter far more.
Direction decides where you ride
Strength picks the kite; direction picks the spot, and on this peninsula it also decides whether a mistake is inconvenient or serious.

On the ocean side the same north-easterly that is side-onshore on the lagoon is offshore. That is what grooms the wave at Foum Labouir, and it is also why that side demands reliable self-rescue.
Turning wind speed into a kite size
A rough starting point for a 75 kg rider on a twin-tip. Add about one size for every 10 kg below that, subtract one for every 10 kg above.

Cross this table with the monthly figures above and the quiver question answers itself. A 7 / 9 / 12 spread covers the overwhelming majority of days across the year; in the June to August window the 8–10 m range does most of the work.
Gusts: the number most people ignore
Compare the gust column with the wind column in the first table. The ratio between them is a decent proxy for how the air will feel:
- Under about 1.3× — smooth, stable air. The pleasant kind of strong.
- 1.3 to 1.5× — noticeable punches. Size down rather than fight it.
- Above 1.5× — unstable, often with an easterly component. Size for the gusts, not the average.
The monthly means sit in a fairly narrow band, which is itself informative: the background trade wind here is not a gusty wind. The rough days tend to be the ones where the direction has swung, not the ones where the average is highest.
Water temperature and what to wear
The cold Canary Current keeps the Atlantic well below what the latitude suggests, and it is the reason a 28 °C air temperature can still mean a full wetsuit.

The lagoon is shallow and can run a couple of degrees above the open-ocean figures on a sunny afternoon at low tide, so treat these as the conservative end. Booties are worth packing for the shallow, shelly sections regardless of month.
Safety notes specific to this coast
- An easterly is offshore on the lagoon. If the wind swings that way mid-session, come in.
- The tidal range is large and the lagoon is shallow: sandbanks appear and disappear inside a single session. Never jump over water you have not crossed at that state of tide.
- Mobile coverage is unreliable at the northern spots. Tell someone where you are riding.
- The UV index reaches 9–11 for much of the year and the constant wind hides the burn. Long sleeves and high-factor sunscreen are equipment, not comfort.
